Trying to sleep when you are in pain can be a difficult thing to do. Whether it’s because you are sore from a workout, have a chronic condition, or have an injury, sleeping can make your body feel even worse. Here are three sleep positions to try the next time you are in pain.

Fetal position for back pain: sleeping in the fetal position with your legs tucked up into your chest is an excellent way to relieve back pain by helping to your disks to rehydrate and recover from a long day of movement.

Flat on your back for shoulder pain: sleeping in an elevated position—no matter how slight—can add stress to your upper back and shoulder area. If you are experiencing pain in either area use a pillow as flat as possible.

Lie on your left side for acid reflux: for a bad case of heartburn, sleeping on your left side helps to separate your stomach area from the lower esophagus, thus reducing any acid reflux.
