Know the highway: typically, two-digit highway numbers like I-90 are the most direct routes, while three digits like I-787 circle around urban areas. When you are looking to explore an area, take the three-digit highway route.

 

Talk to the locals:once you are deep into your trip, stop by a park or gas station and ask the locals about the best places to eat and sights to see.
